성탄을 맞아 순서를 약간 바꾸어서 에센셜오일의 왕으로도 유명한 유향(프랑킨센스)를 먼저 소개하고자 한다. 유향이라는 이름의 프랑킨센스(Frankincense)는 예수님의 탄생을 축하하기 위해 동방박사가 가져온 3가지 선물(유향, 몰약, 황금)중의 하나인 에센셜오일이다.

성경시대 당시, 가장 널리 사용되었을 것으로 추정되는 유향오일은 오일자체가 갖고 있는 항염성분과 방부제 성분의 탁월한 효능으로 인해, 당시 오염되기 쉬운 생활환경에서 건강을 지켜주는, 거의 최고의 만병통치 약이었다. 이는 아마도 유아사망률이 매우 높았을, 당시 상황을 고려한다면 매우 자연스러운 출산 축하선물이었을 것이다.

성경에 총 22번 언급되는 유향은 신약에서는 마태복음에서 처음 언급되나, 구약에서는 애굽을 떠나 광야에서 생활하게 되는 이스라엘백성들에 대해 하나님께서 모세에게 계시하신 여러 가지의 삶의 규례 중에서 제사와 관련되어 많이 언급되는 오일이다. 유향나무에서 수증기 증류법으로 추출한다.
